I know a lot of people who skip the opening acts at shows because they may not know anything about them and only want to see the headliner. I always get there early to catch all of the bands whether I’ve heard of them or not. All the big dogs in music were once puppies clawing their way up the ladder. After many attempts to find out from the venue who, if anyone, was opening for Wolfmother in Raleigh, North Carolina at The Ritz, I finally had a fan of the band respond to one of my many Facebook posts informing me that Deap Vally was opening the show. Well, I’m ok with admitting that I had no clue who they were, but I was definitely going to get there early enough to check this band out. I can definitely say that it was one of the smartest choices that I’ve made lately because I was blown away!
There was a pretty good size crowd already at the venue when the band took the stage and they seemed very eager to forget their troubles and rock out for the night. The band consists of Lindsey Troy on guitar and vocals and Julie Edwards on drums, but Julie isn’t on this tour as she recently became a mom. So, Liv Marsico from the band Liphemra was sitting in for her. Two very talented women, two musical instruments and that was it; there were no other people backing them up on stage or any backing tracks. What happened over the next 30ish minutes was this crazy mix of fuzzy guitar riffs, some distortion, a bit of garage rock, a dose of punk rock with a dash of L7 and Babes in Toyland. All of it combined to create one hell of a musical escape and one of the coolest opening acts that we’ve seen in a long time.
The set list was mainly comprised of tracks off of the band’s debut album Sistrionix which was released in 2013 along with a handful of other tracks which may or may not be included on their new release coming out sometime this year. I’m really hoping that the band makes its way through our neck of the woods again once their new album comes out. They’re still on tour with Wolfmother and we highly encourage you to catch them live if they come through your town. We can guarantee you that it’s an adventure that you will not forget!
