The legendary and influential punk band X laced up their boots and headed back out on the road to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D.J. Bonebrake have seen so many other bands come and go along their journey as well as venturing out themselves with solo projects. Yet, after all the years and all the journeys, they still manage to get together and bring it all back home.
The band made a stop in Carrboro, North Carolina at Cat’s Cradle on May 9 to a packed house of enthusiastic fans. It was a no frills show with the emphasis on the music and that’s exactly what you expect from the band. It was great to see guitarist Billy Zoom on stage with the band after his battle with bladder cancer. He stayed seating on a stool for the majority of the show, but he was still as impressive as ever with his guitar licks. Vocalist Exene Cervenka still sounds amazing and the rhythm section of bassist John Doe and drummer D.J.Bonebrake are tighter than ever and bad-asses in their own right.
We were treated to such cuts as “Motel Room in my Bed,” “In This House That I Call Home,” “The Unheard Music,” “Your Phone’s Off the Hook, But You’re Not,” “Beyond and Back” and many more. The crowd dances, they sang, they drank and were engaged with the band throughout the entire evening. I’m not sure how many more chances we may get to see this incredible band perform together, so do yourself the favor of seeing them if they come anywhere close to your town. I still don’t think that this band truly gets the credit that they deserve for their contributions to music and the impact that they’ve had on so many artists over the years.
