The Goo Goo Dolls made a stop in Raleigh, North Carolina on August 23 at the Red Hat Amphitheater in front of a huge crowd and a sky full of rain clouds. Fans experienced a few minutes of rain during opener Phillip Phillips’ opening song, but then Mother Nature changed her mind and kept everyone dry during the rest of the show.
This had to be the best show that I have ever seen from the Goo Goo Dolls and I have been to and covered many of them. John Rzeznik and Robby Takac were in great spirits the entire evening and very energetic. That especially held true for Robby who covered nearly every inch of the stage running back and forth bare footed! The guys took a few minutes between some of the songs to introduce them with a short story or to trade banter with the enthusiastic crowd. It’s a simple pleasure, but it never gets old seeing those balloons bouncing all around the audience during “Black Balloon.” Is it just me, but do these guys just seem to be getting better with age? The only other thing that many were left questioning was what was up with that hat that John keeps wearing?
Setlist: Tattered Edge / You Should Be Happy, Home, Slide, Big Machine, Over and Over, So Alive, Black Balloon, Lucky Star, Free of Me, Here Is Gone, Use Me, Come to Me, Name, Already There, Bringing on the Light, Flat Top, Sympathy, Better Days, Broadway, (Encore) Iris, Boxes.
