Album Review ~ Nashville Pussy ~ “Pleased to Eat You’

WARNING EXPLICIT CONTENT TO FOLLOW

Nashville Pussy wouldn’t have it any other way. On Pleased to Eat You, their seventh studio album, these undisputed champions of “Raunch and Roll” from Atlanta, Georgia are giving their fans and those with sensible tastes everything they can handle. Basically, if there’s not something on this album that offends you, hypes you up or gets your juices flowing – head to the morgue ‘cause you’re dead.

Pleased to Eat You provides everything one would expect from Nashville Pussy. The Angus-like rock guitar from Ruyter Suys (pronounced Rider Sighs) to the Mother Goose rhymes of the lyrics wailed by co-founder and Suys husband Blaine Cartwright. This is the band providing exactly what their fans demand! (Note: Mother Goose if she was a crack whore selling tricks for dope on 7th Avenue.)

What people shouldn’t do is let the raunch distract them from the absolute ass kickin’ rock this release contains. The band is in amazing form as bassist Bonnie “Bon” Buitrago provides the rhythmically hard pounding needed to keep up with the intensity of Suys lead. On the drums, former landscaper, Ben Thomas keeps the kit humming and provides the “more cowbell” necessary to consider this a true rock album.

In a cool ending to the album, Blaine’s Bedtime Stories recants some of the lyrics on the album. Recommend listeners check this out first to really get a feel for what they’re about to be assaulted with in this spoken word piece.

There are plenty of highlights on Nice to Eat You and they start with the opening chords of the very first song and continue to the end. It’s easy to appreciate what the Pussy is doing and exactly why the late great Lemmy Kilmister once described them as “America’s last great rock’n roll band.”

Pleased to Eat You is as southern fried as rock gets but so much more. There are hints of the Motor City Madman, Ted Nugent whose dedication to Nashville pussy prior to “Wang Dang Sweet Poon Tang” off Double Live Gonzo, provided the inspiration for the band’s moniker. Add a little Twisted Sister and a dash of AC/DC with a smidge of Living Colour and you’ve got an album you get a complete serving of rock.

Producer Daniel Rey (Ramones, White Zombie, Ronnie Spector and Raging Slab) and studio engineer David Barrick (Black Stone Cherry, The Kentucky Headhunters, Marshall Tucker Band), capture the band perfectly as they are in great form. The duo have captured the energy usually reserved Nashville Pussy’s live performances. Coming off of a European tour, Nashville Pussy, must have still had that in your face attitude they display live.

In particular, “One Bad Mother” and “We Want a War” take you by the collar, throw you to the ground and kick you in the face with their timeless rock.

(For those not familiar with the band) If you were raised on a diet of Marshall stacks, Gibson Guitars, Jack Daniels, and weed, with a little disdain for Christian hypocrisies on top, then this is an album and band you should be checking out.
