Album Review ~ Ice Nine Kills ~ ‘The Silver Scream’

Boston based Ice Nine Kills have released their latest album entitled The Silver Scream and, my word, is it amazing! Taking inspiration from their love of horror movies, the band has created a near perfect masterpiece of an album.

Opening with the first single/video, “The American Nightmare” is a monster hit built around Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm St. A lot of great references to the movie, including remaking the classic “1,2 Freddy’s Coming For You.” The chorus on this song is undeniable; I was pumping my fist and singing along instantly.

The band takes a trip down to Camp Crystal Lake with the aptly titled, “Thank God It’s Friday.” I think I found my new TGIF anthem to rock on Fridays. Blending together synth elements with their metalcore madness and pop sensibilities, really take this song to next level heights. You will have this on repeat, I guarantee it.

“Stabbing in the Dark” pays tribute to John Carpenter’s Halloween and the infamous Michael Myers. Vocalist Spencer Charnas truly brings his A-game to the table. Smooth transitions between melodic and clean to screaming and growling sound like it comes effortlessly.

“SAVAGES” is more a heavier mainstream track that’s dedicated to Leatherface and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Inspired by Brandon Lee’s cinematic masterpiece The Crow, “A Grave Mistake” is a haunting ballad with gorgeous piano and acoustic arrangements. This has the potential to be a huge hit at any mainstream hard rock station.

Sam Kubrick, grandson of world famous director, Stanley Kubrick lends guest vocals to “Stay The Night” which is all out metal homage to The Shining. It was really cool to hear the small clip of the twins and their classic line, “Come play with us!”

Drawing from the cult favorite Silent Night, Deadly Night, “Merry Axemas” will become an instant holiday classic. The church bells and carolers are a brilliantly added touch.

There are some great guest appearances on the album as well. Jaws-inspired “Rocking the Boat,” features former bandmate Jeremy Schwartz. “The Jig Is Up,” features guest guitar work from Randy Strohmeyer from the bands, Finch and The Sound of Animals Fighting.

Honoring An American Werewolf in London, the ballad “Love Bites” boasts a beautiful duet with guest vocals from Chelsea Talmadge. She is best known for her role as Carol in the Netflix series, Stranger Things.

The album’s closer, “It Is The End” brings this horror movie themed masterpiece to an end. Listening to Spencer (Charnas) channel Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s epic tale IT is just awe inspiring. I may be making a bold statement, but this has to be the album’s crowning achievement.

My mind and my ears have truly been blown with the release of The Silver Scream. Everyone knows that metal music and horror movies are just a natural combination. Ice Nine Kills have presented that union in such a unique and enjoyable way. I believe that whether you are a fan of metal, horror movies, or both, then this album is a must have in your collection. Bravo to INK on this killer (pun intended) release. Rating: 9/10 Stars.
